Inspired by Art Deco
To step through the doors of DecoDance is to cross the threshold of a portal into the era of Dashiell Hammett’s San Francisco, but celebrated with the lavish glamour of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald running amok in Art Deco 1920’s Paris. This is no speakeasy. Instead, one enters a space of bold shapes, geometric patterns, symmetrical lines, block colors, and flattering lighting, as designed by IG Project Group, under the leadership of Guila Ismagilova - winner of International Design Association award IDA - 2019. Her distinct vision has created a luxurious aesthetic as timeless and elegant as an Erte or Tamara de Lempicka painting.
If you squint your eyes, you can almost see William Powell and Myrna Loy, on a break from filming After the Thin Man, standing at the gorgeous mahogany bar, sipping martinis. Though the beautiful bar was itself carved in England, in 1875, when Queen Victoria still reigned, it blends seamlessly into the Art Deco splendor of the room over which it’s richly mirrored back bar arcs.
On some nights, one may wander in to find vintage-clad dancers rotating in front of a jazz band paying homage to Django Reinhardt. On Friday and Saturday, our hard at work mixologists are surrounded by a trendy modern crowd looking to socialize with abandon. When seeking to relax and unwind, our weekday après-work scene is low-key and comfortable.
DecoDance offers a splendid array of fine spirits, with which we concoct a carefully considered menu of craft cocktails, with selections to cater to every palate.
The cocktails on our menu feature libations fashioned with fresh, local, seasonal fruits, and unique offerings include the English Breakfast, made with Earl Grey infused gin. And don’t pass up our Gold Digger, Kanye- featuring peanut butter whiskey. It’ll leave you feeling giddy.
In our fantasy portal, Frida Kahlo arrived fashionably late to the party, getting to San Francisco in 1930. She once said, “I drank to drown my sorrows, but the damned things learned how to swim.” Known for her appreciation of a fine tequila, we like to think she’d appreciate Don Julio 1942 (though he was a child of five, in Mexico, when she landed in our fair city). We stock the finest sipping tequilas, in her honor.
Humphrey Bogart also landed in California in 1930. Rumor has it Bogart was the only cast member on the set of African Queen who didn’t contract dysentery. He didn’t drink the water, only scotch. We stock single malts fit for his discernment, including Macallan Rare Cask.
Finally, we’d like to bring our story into the roaring 2020s. We think Bill Murray, an American icon famous for jumping in on random celebrations, should stop by to peruse our fine selection of Japanese whiskeys. Is he genuinely partial to Suntory?
We stock Yamazaki 18, just in case.
For those, like us, fond of locally distilled spirits, we stock Bummer & Lazarus gin and St George Breaking & Entering whiskey, among other boutique labels.
Come raise a glass with us, in a space designed to make you feel elevated, whether you’re dressed to the nines, post opera; looking for a place to hang your fedora, as you take in some soul-soothing jazz; or seeking a comfortable booth with friends, to shake off the week’s work stress.
